Growing Up

This week Luca hit two big milestones, which reminded us how fast this little guy is growing and becoming his own person. He said his first complete sentences (in Spanish), clear enough for both Michelle and I to understand him and within the context of our conversation at the time:
“Donde esta Shiki? / Where is Shiki (his friend)?
“Vamos a casa con Kimchi y Tofu” /Let’s go home with Kimchi and Tofu
Then later on the week we converted his crib to a toddler’s bed. I admit this was harder for me than for him! For two weeks or so, he had been giving us a hard time when we put him in his crib to sleep, he will always tell us that he wants to sleep in our bed (not necessarily with us though ) but I guess he liked the freedom of moving around. He seem to had adjust very well to his new set up and so far not falling down from it in the middle of the night:)

Picnic Season Has Arrived!!

We had a beautiful weather this past weekend and went to Prospect Park, one of our favorite places in Brooklyn , for some sun and fun. Luca had a blast kicking the ball with his papa and chasing Michelle around. He also was very determined to ride his scooter on the grass, while Kimchi and Tofu were just trilled to be out and able to rollover on the grass.

Children’s Day (Kodomo No Hi)

May 5th is Japan’s Children’s Day. It is a national holiday full of traditions that celebrate children’s happiness:) Among those traditions are the making of carp shaped flags and the samurai helmet, symbols that represent a strong and healthy child. Luca got to celebrate this special day twice; Friday at his Japanese class and today at his friend Shiki’s house along with their friend Enzo. Hiroko made special carp shaped pizza for the kids as well as the traditional rice cakes and chimaki wrapped in bamboo leaves all delicious!

It was a great weekend that ended with a visit to the playground for some swing action!

Couple of weeks ago we were able to see the cherry blossom trees in full bloom at Washington Sq. park. Luca is becoming very interested with flowers in general, specially since in his Japanese class, this topic comes out very often. He likes to touch these gently and smell them, luckily no sign of allergies yet:)

Today, April 30th, is Children’s Day in Mexico. To celebrate Michelle and I took Luca to Time’s Square to check out the Disney and Toy’s R Us stores. We have been there before but now that he recognizes his favorite characters is more fun to see his excited little face:) Luckily he didn’t ask for anything but nevertheless we got him a little present that he opened with papa once at home. At Toy’s R Us, he rode the ferris wheel for the first time which he enjoyed but he got really scared with the Jurassic park giant T-Rex robot (hope he doesn’t have nightmares tonight).

Hot Wheels

Watch out Lower East Side, here comes trouble!! We got Luca his first scooter and helmet this past weekend but he didn’t pay much attention to these. In fact since he REFUSED to wear the helmet, he wouldn’t even come near these. Today, we met up with Evan to go for a trial ride. Evan has had his scooter for couple of months already and when Luca saw him wearing a helmet, he got so excited that he let me put his with no fuss . At the playground down the street, Evan “taught” Luca the basic moves. With a little more of practice I have a feeling that very soon he will be able to zoom in and out the neighborhood so it will be more like, “catch me if you can, mama!”

Who needs toys when you have a cardboard box full of packaging chips!! It even turned out to be the best seat in the house for some Sesame Street watching .

Fun With Evan

We met Evan and his mom Monica at the end of last summer and since then Evan and Luca have been best buddies. Not only they get along super well but they live a block away from us, it couldn’t be more convenient specially since we usually meet 2-3 times a week for playdates. Today, we decided to take them to the Imagination playground down at South St Seaport and they had a blast!!

A Day In The Sun

My friend Hiroko and her son Shiki, invited us over for a playdate at the Washington Sq. Village playground; this is a residents only park (you need to have a key to access it). The playground is quite nice and Luca had a blast going around and about exploring it. Thanks Shiki for the good time!
